Dental crowns (sometimes called dental caps) are designed to restore damaged teeth and get them back to full function. Not only do they strengthen teeth, but they also closely resemble the appearance of natural teeth, which can improve how your smile looks, too.
At Denton Oak Dentistry, we provide custom dental crowns to help your smile get back to as good as new.
Reasons You May Need a Dental Crown
Wondering why you would ever need a dental crown in the first place? There are few different situations that could call for one! Here are some of the most common reasons we might suggest you get one:
- To restore a cracked or broken tooth
- To protect a tooth weakened by decay
- To cover a worn down or misshapen tooth
- To replace a large or fractured filling
- To strengthen a tooth after a root canal
- To cover a severely discolored or stained tooth
- To secure a dental bridge in place
- To top a dental implant
About the Tooth Cap Procedure
The tooth cap procedure is generally completed in two separate appointments. To begin, we'll prepare the tooth in question so that there is room for the dental crown to fit correctly. We'll take impressions of your tooth, choose the correct color using a tooth shade guide, and send this information to a lab. Afterwards, we'll fit you with a temporary crown.
Once we get your custom crown back from the lab (this usually takes a couple weeks), we'll remove the temporary crown and then place and polish the permanent one. During this appointment, we will also make any necessary adjustments in terms of spacing and your bite to ensure that it feels natural.
Overall, you shouldn't expect discomfort during the procedure. If you are at all anxious about the treatment, we can offer you the option of sedation dentistry to help calm your nerves.
