Halitosis Treatment

Halitosis Treatment

Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath, which may be a result of poor dental care habits or could also be a sign of underlying problems with one’s oral or physical health.

Your Diet and Bad Breath

Every food you consume breaks down in the mouth. Odor from the food you eat does not go away until the foods have completely passed through your body.

Bad Breath and Poor Oral Hygiene Habits

If you follow a good oral care routine involving daily brushing and flossing, food particles can remain stuck in your mouth, causing growth of bacteria around the gums, in the teeth and on the tongue, which leads to bad breath. Smoking or chewing tobacco-based products can also become a reason for halitosis, teeth staining and irritation in the gums.

Health Problems Associated with Halitosis

  • Gum Disease
  • Dry Mouth
  • Cavities
  • Yeast Infection
  • Systemic diseases such as diabetes, respiratory tract infections, liver or kidney problems, chronic acid reflux, etc.

Tips to Prevent Bad Breath

Bad breath can be reduced or prevented if you:

  • Practice good oral hygiene
  • Replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months
  • If you wear dentures, keep them clean and remove them at night
  • Visit our office for biannual checkups and cleanings
  • Avoid using tobacco based products and smoking
  • Drink lots of water to keep your oral cavity moist

At Denton Oak Dentistry, we offer comprehensive treatment for bad breath depending upon its cause. Mostly, a deep dental cleaning can refresh the mouth and help get rid of the odor. If some other problem is causing bad breath, treatment will be administered accordingly, and you will also be advised upon how to follow a good home care regimen.
